Event Details
Terezin concentration camp, Czechoslovakia. Morning, January 21st 1943, cold and bleak. A group of children with their teacher, Irma Lauscher secretly planted a tree in a courtyard near their barracks to mark Tu Bishv'at. The tree became a symbol of hope, nurtured by children who passed through Terezin and after the war by generations of Irma's family. In 1996, a visiting party from NPLS picked up some of its seeds. One tree now stands at Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre, the other in Northwood. The original tree died in the 2004 floods in the Czech Republic. It has now been replaced. June 2012 marks the 70th anniversary of the deportation of Czech and Slovak Jewry. We rededicate ourselves to the memory of the children who planted the 'mother' tree and to the development of their legacy.
